I am very apprehensive about this. I've watched the trailer a few times now and there are a few things that worry me.

The thing to remember is that the trailer is a trailer.  It's a 90 second advertisement for a TV series intended to create buzz, and that's far too short a time to focus on things like story or character development.  Trailers almost always focus on splashy visuals, even for productions that are primarily about other things.

So... we'll see.  There's a good chance they'll screw it up, but it's not guaranteed yet.

Even still. Let's say we had a well put together story with interesting characters. I'd do a trailer with a treatment/script like the following.

.....

.....

Open with an old transistor radio playing a 50's pop song. Maybe Billie Holiday singing "Blue Moon". Suddenly a booted foot (maybe power armor?) steps on and crushes the radio.

Voice over by Ron Pearlman (or someone else with sufficient gravely gravitas): "War."

Shot of someone running away from something off camera and getting shot in the back.

Voice over: "War never changes."

Montage of action sequences showing at least three factions. A bomber with a Chinese flag dropping bombs. Skeletons. Husks of buildings in abandoned settlements. Someone in a suit of power armor getting blown up by a mortar.

Cut to a blindingly brite light. As it slowly fades we see the outline of a fault door with a person silhouetted in front, their hand held up shielding their eyes.

Cut to the outside of the vault and a foot breaking the plane of the vault entrance, but no shot of who it is yet.

Voiceover of vault overseer explaining why this person is leaving (exile, foolishness, "We need you to...")

More action scenes. Another shot of the person walking through a ruined town with only the sound of their feet crunching on dead twigs and maybe a broken bone. We see fleeting movement within the shadow of a building, but not enough clarity to make out what it is.

Voiceover of a ghoul lit by a fire that says something to the effect of, "Well, smooth-skin, I guess this choice is your's. Who are we going to save, and who are you going to abandon." Cut to our protagonist and we finally see their face, grimy with dried blood. They look exhausted and overwhelmed by the weight. They close their eyes, take a deep breath, and open them with a look of determination.

Buddu-duh-Buddu-duh - more action montage.

Shot of an antagonist from a low camera angle. They say something sinister about "Doing what is necessary," or "Bringing order to chaos", or something else similarly grandiose but sinister.

Mushroom cloud.

"War. Never. Changes."

Title Card:
"Fallout. Coming to Amazon [date]."

Agreed. Sure anyone can think of a better way to do it. We all think we are smarter than those doing it. It's what we do.

Apprehensive? Sure about our current gov, our future debt, possible war with others or the financial collapse that's likely coming to the housing market. To a video game series that is made for entertainment? Not in the least.

What you are failing to grasp is that This is where I go to escape from all of that. In the real world a known traitor who has already attempted a coup is the frontrunner for the GOP nomination and the only guy standing between him and our first inept autocracy is the most milk toast centre-right nobody I've ever seen. yikes.

But in the commonwealth, I'm rebuilding. I'm building settlements where people have foid and clean water. Security. A world where settlers look at me and say "you work, you eat." a sentiment that really does not apply to the real world.

The Post-nuclear hellscape of fallout is my escape from the boring dystopia I currently live in, and I fear I'm about to watch somebody ruin that to.

For the record, I didn't sah the show was going to be bad. I don't know that. I haven't seen it.

What I said was the trailer looks like crap. and it does.

With all these problems in the world, what I'd love to see now is a work of popular art that wrestles with these themes. One that takes the sting out by satirizing the problems with our world, the people who seek power, and how organizations become insular and inept over time. One that pokes fun at all of it with a sense of glee, but ultimately presents an image that - even though our society is doomed to make mistakes, where even after the worst imaginable scenario occurs, ultimately people will take care of each other and life will carry on.

If only there were a setting like that pre-made to tell that sort of story...

I am the FO fan that actually liked NV the least. Still great and better than most games, but of the modern franchise, it's 3rd to me. 3>4>NV

I'd say 3>NV>4    Preston's endless quests and the forced city building aspect (as minor as it was) kinda killed 4 for me.

I'll give the show a shot. Making myself sick about it before it releases seems like a waste of time to me.

I had a bit of time in the game, but no whwere near as much as other. I tend to start a game, realize I made a ton of mistakes, but still finish it anyhow, and then do another play through and then leave it for a long time before I pick it up again. I had just picked up 4 again when Baldur's Gate released.

I really liked the settlement building in 4, but tended to build very sparse settlements that met the needs of everybody without making grand structures like I saw some others do.

Apparently berkeleying EVERYTHING has to be political so just shut this E36 M3 down.

You don't really get to complain that everything is political now when you're the one who brought politics into it,

I really wish Fallout NV was on the switch. I played the heck out of it on my Xbox 360 but that console doesn't really work anymore. It was such a great game and I never got to play the DLC.

I'm hopeful for the show, mostly because the source material is pretty broad. Like others have said, it could easily be set in an area we've never seen in the games. I will admit that seeing a smooth-skinned ghoul was kinda lame though. He just looked like a guy without a nose.

Here is an imbed of the above:

As I think I said previously, this would be a pretty good vehicle for some semi-associated stories ala Twilite Zone or the original Start Trek.  That would also work well to integrate some of the games shorter story lines also.   It kind of looks like they are going for a bigger story by the trailer, but even still, there is still huge potential for stories, even if you have to move locations / Vaults (like the game does).

(This series is going to be massively popular on the pirate sites....)

Okay... that's more promising. I'm going to keep my hopes relatively low. I think if it's as good as season 1 of The Witcher, I'll be very pleased.

You shouldn't need to. There were 7(?) games in the series and this is not following the plotlines of any of them.

Anywhere between 5 and 14 depending on which games you count. :)

But yes, it would be foolish for Amazon to set up the show such that you need to have played the game to enjoy it.

Plus having the main character as a Vault Dweller is a handy conceit to keep the audience up to speed. They will be unfamiliar with the world, so will need new things explained to them as much as the audience does.

agreed and I think they are putting enough fanboi goodies in to make it more entertaining to the gamers. IT's got to be hard trying to make something like this good enough to not piss off the fans but simple enough/flowing to keep new people that have never heard of it.

New Vegas DLC was all over the place. Dead Money was almost universally reviled, while Lonesome Road had some of the greatest moments in the entire series.

I'm cautiously optimistic based on the new trailer
