One of the ways that Ford pushrod engines are better than Chevy is that the distributor is driven by the timing chain end of the camshaft. Even with the constant load of the oil pump to damp the loads, Chevy timing is all over the place because the cam twists around like a wet noodle.
The unspoken reason why GM stuck the distributor on the timing cover on the LT1. It sure as heck was not for ease of service
